Description
Third up for today's listings of the 3 different vintage Millers Falls spiral ratchet screwdrivers is this vintage Millers Falls, Made in USA, No. 670 spiral ratchet screwdriver. This has the single wooden handle, and the spring-loaded chuck, which you push down to release and change the bit. The wooden handle is in nice condition - it never received the signature Millers Falls red varnish. There is some denting on the butt of the handle (5th picture), which I can only attribute to the handle being banged on the benchtop (completely unnecessary) when the chuck collar was being pushed down to change the bits. The handle is solidly attached to the drive mechanism, with no looseness. The plating is sound. The large knurled collar (6th picture at right) rotates to allow for clockwise and counterclockwise driving, or to lock the shaft, which can be done with the shaft in the handle or extended.
The narrower knurled collar right under the chuck locks the shaft in the down (in the tool) position.
NOW PLEASE NOTE that this is the spring type of driver. The shaft will shoot out when you turn the narrow collar, so don't do that by the fine china OR BY ANYONE'S FACE. All of the mechanicals work fine. The bit in the chuck is in good condition, it is marked "Yankee", and has not been reground or messed with. The tool takes the standard 7/32" diameter bits (10th and 11th pictures). Weighs 8.6 ounces. Nice tool of this type.
I am listing the tools separately, but I am not requiring immediate payment with the Buy-It-Now, so if anyone wants more than one, I will be able to figure out shipping and invoice accordingly.
