Description
The Capped Bust design was used for silver half dimes from 1829 to 1837.When this coin was issued, silver dollars were not being minted; half dollars were primarily for bank-to-bank settlements; and the copper cents and half cents were unpopular. It has been estimated that there was only one half dime, dime or quarter in circulation PER PERSON in the 1830s. The U. S. coins in circulation were heavily used, and foreign silver coins--primarily from Spanish Colonial mints in the New World--were legal tender and in circulation.
