Purchasing labs with Cisco 1700 family series routers for CCENT, CCNA, CCNP & CCIE Routing & Switching path is not a wise purchase.
Reason:
These are
1-
old Routers with limited memory and flash size and won't let the latest IOS to be installed.
2-
These family routers are cheap, small routers looking like a home router or switch in black color. The casing is made of plastic instead of metal. These routers were designed for home/small office use and not the Enterprise Networking.
3-
Being small in size no NM module card can be installed on these routers. NM modules such as frame-relay modules are a definite part of any Cisco study. Studying CCENT, CCNA, CCNP, & CCIE R&S involves technologies and topics related to Enterprise networking which these routers cannot support.
NOT suitable for CCENT, CCNA, CCNP, CCIE Routing & Switching Study path.
Buying labs which has these series of router may be cheap but it is a waste of money. Buying a Cisco lab is not about getting the most quantity routers and switches as you can. It is about knowing how many routers and switches your study needs and also knowing which routers and switches has the capability to support your exam topics. Otherwise there are routers and switches on eBay for under each which won't really benefit you for your study. (Cisco 1700 series). Keep Reading and I will give you hints and advise on how to choose your perfect home/office lab and spending your money wisely.

Cisco 2500 Series Routers:
(2501, 2502, 2503, 2504, 2505, 2507, 2513, 2514, 2515, 2516 and 2517)
Purchasing labs with Cisco 2500 family series routers for CCENT, CCNA, CCNP & CCIE Routing & Switching path is not a wise purchase.
Reason:
1-
Very Old Routers with limited memory and flash size (16MB Memory / 16MB flash Maximum) which won't let the latest IOS to be installed.
2-
These family routers are cheap and in black color. The casing is made of metal of course but although they are the standard size Cisco Routers but there is no slot for any NM Module or WIC module card.
3-
NM modules such as frame-relay modules and WIC cards such as WIC-1T are a definite part of any Cisco study, but this router simply doesn't let you to install any of them.
4-
The problem is not just this, the main issue is that there is no Fast-Ethernet Port (only 1x Ethernet port) and you must use an extra device called AUI transceiver to connect to Ethernet. Using an AUI transceiver device to connect to the port is a pain and lots of headache! Stay away! Studying CCENT, CCNA, CCNP, & CCIE R&S involves technologies and topics related to Enterprise networking which these routers cannot support.
NOT suitable for CCENT, CCNA, CCNP, CCIE Routing & Switching Study path.

Purchasing labs with Cisco 2500 family series routers for CCENT, CCNA, CCNP & CCIE Routing & Switching path is not a wise purchase.
Reason:  1-
As you know Cisco has divided its certification path into Routing & Switching, Voice, Security, Wireless, etc...SOOO Cisco also has designed Routers and Switches and other devices related to these fields. For example Cisco has made routers that best serve to route data packets. Cisco also has made routers that best serve to route Voice packets. Are you getting what I am trying to say? I want to tell you that Cisco 2800 series routers are designed to best serve Voice technologies and related studies and not suitable for Cisco Routing and Switching path which involves data packets.
NOT suitable for CCENT, CCNA, CCNP, CCIE Routing & Switching Study path.
If you are a Cisco Voice student you will need to have these family routers but if you are studying Routing and Switching path which I think you are, that's why you are here reading this, then Cisco 1841 and 2600XM series are your best choices. Both of these routers (1841 and 2600XM) are integrated into my Labs. Not only they are 2600XM but also that they are 2611XM which has 2-fast-Ethernet onboard compare to 2610XM and 2620XM which has only 1x Fast-Ethernet. Also there are 2x IOS in each router's flash with memory size 128MB and flash size of 48MB. The list goes on and on....

Why is it better to have 2x IOS in each device instead of 1x IOS?
I once been a student myself and I know how frustrating it is when you accidentally delete the IOS from the device or for some reason it gets corrupted and the device won't boot up. To solve this problem all your lab routers and switches have 2x IOS installed. You are getting routers and switches that have a main and a backup IOS installed in the Root of the flash. This means the machines in your home/office lab will never let you down and even if the main IOS is gone the 2nd IOS automatically boots up the switch for you, without you realizing a change. In fact almost all my lab devices have 2xIOS installed (one main and one back up) (R1 in Lab 1* Star has only 1x IOS because of limited flash size).
